The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has announced a new initiative aimed at supporting women entrepreneurs in Nigeria’s small business sector. The chamber will provide 50 free exhibition booths to women-owned businesses as part of activities marking International Women’s Day.

The initiative is designed to give female entrepreneurs an opportunity to showcase their products and services to investors, distributors and potential customers.

Expanding market access for women entrepreneurs

ACCI explained that many women-owned SMEs face challenges accessing major trade events because of high participation costs. By offering free exhibition spaces, the chamber hopes to create a platform where female business owners can promote their brands and reach wider markets.

Participants will be able to display products, interact with buyers and connect with potential partners during the event.

Organisers say the programme will also provide networking opportunities that can help entrepreneurs develop collaborations and new supply relationships.

Supporting gender inclusion in business

Women play a significant role in Nigeria’s SME sector, particularly in retail, agriculture, fashion and food production. However, many female entrepreneurs face structural barriers such as limited access to finance and market exposure.

ACCI noted that initiatives that highlight women-led businesses are important for improving participation in the formal economy.

Providing platforms that increase visibility for women entrepreneurs can contribute to stronger SME growth and broader economic inclusion.

Potential economic impact

Business exhibitions often serve as entry points for small businesses seeking distribution agreements or investor interest. Exposure to larger audiences can lead to partnerships that support expansion.

Industry observers say programmes that encourage women-led enterprises can strengthen Nigeria’s SME ecosystem because small businesses remain the largest source of employment in the country.

As policymakers and business organisations continue to promote gender inclusion, initiatives like this could help more women transform small enterprises into sustainable businesses.
