The Lagos State government has strengthened its partnership with Sweden to expand collaboration in technology, digital infrastructure, and the green economy. This development followed the visit of Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria to Lagos on Tuesday, as part of efforts to deepen international relations and promote economic growth.

Crown Princess Victoria visits Lagos
Crown Princess Victoria was received at Lagos House in Marina by Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, who represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during the official engagement.
Dr. Hamzat described Lagos as Nigeria’s innovation hub and Africa’s digital gateway. He highlighted the state’s demographic strength, saying, “With a population of 22 million—twice Sweden’s size,” Lagos offers significant potential for growth in technology and digital sectors.
He also spoke on the 6,800-kilometre fibre optic network expansion project, aimed at enhancing digital access across the state. According to him, major technology companies like Google and four private firms are already establishing data centres in Lagos, signalling increased investor confidence.

Focus on digital innovation and green economy
The Crown Princess commended Lagos for its economic relevance and emphasised the need to strengthen bilateral cooperation. Her visit underscored growing interest in shared initiatives between both countries, especially in areas such as clean energy, digital transformation, and capacity building.
Sweden’s Minister for Infrastructure and Housing, Mr. Andreas Carlson, announced a new step in Swedish-Nigerian relations. He said Sweden would open its first Trade Office in Nigeria. “Lagos was the ideal location to kick-start this initiative, given its economic significance and business-friendly environment,” Carlson said.

Opportunities for Startups and Small Businesses
The partnership is expected to support startups and small businesses by providing access to trade networks, innovation partnerships, and funding opportunities. Key focus areas include clean energy, cybersecurity, and smart infrastructure.
