…Lagos holds pre-season training for agricultural workers

The Lagos State Government has called on stakeholders in the agriculture sector to adopt technology and artificial intelligence (AI) to improve food production and achieve food security.

This message was delivered during a pre-season training organised by the Lagos State Agricultural Development Authority (LSADA). The event, held at the Women’s Development Centre in Agege, brought together agricultural extension agents, farmer group representatives, and industry participants.

Focus on urban agriculture and technology

Themed “AI-powered urban agriculture in Lagos State: enhancing agricultural extension services for increased food production,” the training focused on integrating modern technologies into farming, particularly within urban environments.

Project Manager of LSADA, Aliru Alade, was represented at the event by the Director of Rural Institution Development, Aderonke Toju-Tubi. He said, “The initiative is designed to equip farmers with modern tools and techniques that will significantly enhance both the quality and quantity of food production in Lagos.”

He added that the programme supports the state government’s goal of building a tech-driven agricultural sector. Alade also acknowledged the commitment of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, stating that “the administration’s strategic policy direction continues to drive forward farmer-focused programmes.”

State government reaffirms commitment to food systems

Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture and Food Systems, Oluwarotimi Fashola, also spoke at the event. He described the training as “a vital step in reinforcing the agricultural foundation of the state and empowering its farmers and extension agents.”

The state government has continued to invest in capacity building for agricultural workers to increase food availability. The training is part of wider efforts to strengthen food systems and reduce dependency on food imports.

With urban farming and AI-based techniques, Lagos aims to support a more sustainable and secure food future.
