The Ugandan government has set a target to grow the economy from $50 billion to $500 billion by 2040, with tourism identified as a key sector alongside agro-industrialisation, mineral development, and science and technology. Uganda’s participation in OTM Bombay aims to position the country as an alternative African tourism destination.
Uganda highlights tourism potential at Asia’s leading travel expo
The Open Travel Market (OTM) Bombay Tourism Expo opened on 30 January 2025 at the Jio World Convention Centre, Mumbai, India. Uganda is participating under the theme “Explore Uganda, the Pearl of Africa,” as it seeks to expand its footprint in the global tourism market.

Showcasing Uganda’s tourism offerings
Uganda’s delegation, led by the Uganda High Commission in New Delhi and Uganda Airlines, is promoting its unique tourism products, including gorilla and chimpanzee tracking, birding, safaris, and cultural heritage. The country is also leveraging the event to strengthen the Entebbe–Mumbai route and attract at least 50 international tour operators to include Uganda in their travel packages.
Interest from Indian tour operators and investors
Indian Minister of Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, visited Uganda’s pavilion and encouraged stronger tourism ties between the two countries. Indian tour operators expressed interest in selling Uganda as a destination.
Film producer Ramji, who had previously considered filming in Uganda, renewed his commitment to a tourism-focused film project after discussions with Ugandan officials. Viral Shah, CEO of Forum World Wide, pledged to bring more Indian tourists and plans to visit Uganda in June to create promotional content.

Engagements with travel industry leaders
Amey Amladi, COO of Akbar Travels, India’s leading tour operator for Africa-bound travellers, agreed to explore Uganda’s tourism market. He will be included in a proposed tourism familiarisation trip to Uganda.
Over 50 companies and individuals visited Uganda’s stall, with some expressing interest in tourism and business partnerships. The Ugandan team plans follow-ups to convert these engagements into long-term opportunities for the country’s tourism sector.
