The Federal Government has announced a strategic partnership with Google to position Nigeria as a global technology hub. This initiative follows a high-level meeting in Paris between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, where they discussed advancing Nigeria’s role in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital innovation.
The partnership is expected to accelerate Nigeria’s digital economy, leveraging AI and emerging technologies to drive economic growth and job creation.

NITDA highlights key focus areas
Kashifu Inuwa, Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), underscored the significance of the collaboration during a recent interview with Arise TV.
He stated that the partnership will lead to the development of a comprehensive roadmap for Nigeria’s digital transformation, concentrating on AI expansion, digital skills development, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
According to Inuwa, integrating AI into various sectors—including healthcare, agriculture, finance, and education—is expected to enhance efficiency and productivity, leading to significant economic benefits. AI-driven solutions could revolutionize Nigeria’s industries by optimizing supply chains, improving access to financial services, and enhancing smart agriculture through predictive analytics.
Additionally, the partnership includes initiatives aimed at training millions of Nigerians in digital skills, ensuring that the country’s workforce is prepared to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving technology landscape.

Building on previous collaborations
This partnership builds on previous joint efforts between NITDA and Google, such as the Google Hustle Academy Bootcamp, which offered free online training for SMEs to improve business operations and revenue generation.
Another notable collaboration includes Google’s Equiano subsea cable, which aims to improve internet connectivity across Nigeria and West Africa, ultimately reducing data costs and boosting digital inclusion.
Additionally, Google’s AI research lab in Accra, Ghana, which works on developing AI solutions for Africa, is expected to collaborate with Nigerian institutions to drive local AI innovations. These efforts align with NITDA’s broader mission to create self-sustaining ecosystems that accelerate the development of an indigenous IT industry and transition Nigeria into a knowledge-based society.

Nigeria’s digital future
The Federal Government’s commitment to digital transformation, bolstered by global tech leaders like Google, emphasizes Nigeria’s potential to emerge as a leading technology hub on the international stage.
With AI and digital innovation at the forefront, this partnership is expected to drive sustainable economic growth and technological advancement across multiple sectors.
Moreover, Nigeria’s youthful population—over 60% of whom are under the age of 25—represents a vast talent pool ready to propel the country into a competitive digital economy.
The success of this collaboration could serve as a model for other African nations looking to leverage AI and digital technologies for national development.
As Nigeria strengthens its digital infrastructure, policies, and innovation ecosystem, the partnership with Google is poised to be a catalyst for broader transformation, fostering job creation, entrepreneurship, and global competitiveness.
