The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) has reiterated its dedication to empowering Nigerian entrepreneurs as 100 young Nigerians graduate from Lelook Bag Academy’s bag-making training program.
The initiative, backed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Nigeria, provides participants with essential skills to start and scale their businesses. It also strategically positions them for opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which connects 1.3 billion people across the continent with a combined GDP exceeding $3.4 trillion.
Participants received hands-on training in design, production, and marketing, equipping them with the practical know-how to establish sustainable businesses in the competitive fashion and accessories industry.

SMEDAN applauds initiative and founder’s dedication
SMEDAN, led by Director-General Charles Odii, shared the development on its official X handle, commending the initiative for fostering self-reliance among young Nigerians. The agency also praised Mrs. Chinwe Ezenwa, founder of Lelook Bag Academy, for her commitment to skill development and youth empowerment.
Under Ezenwa’s leadership, the academy has trained hundreds of young people, many of whom have gone on to establish thriving businesses or secure employment in the industry.
Impact on job creation and economic growth
The training initiative is expected to have a significant ripple effect on the Nigerian economy by creating job opportunities and promoting local manufacturing.
With Nigeria’s unemployment rate currently estimated at 33%, programs like this play a crucial role in addressing joblessness by providing young people with in-demand skills.
Additionally, graduates from the program will have access to SMEDAN’s support services, including funding opportunities, business mentorship, and market linkages to help sustain their ventures.

SMEDAN emphasized that equipping young Nigerians with practical skills remains a core strategy for reducing unemployment and strengthening the country’s small business sector.
The agency also plans to collaborate with other organizations to scale up training programs in other sectors, ensuring a broader reach and greater economic impact.
