SMEDAN creates over 90,000 jobs, supports over 116,000 entrepreneurs in Q1 2025

The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) has announced the creation of 90,160 jobs across the country in the first quarter of 2025.

This was made possible through its nationwide empowerment programmes focused on business training, access to finance, and support tools for entrepreneurs.

In its Q1 2025 performance report, the agency stated that 116,661 entrepreneurs received direct support. The initiative aims to strengthen small businesses and create more economic opportunities.

Strategic partnerships and training

SMEDAN partnered with private organisations such as Google and Wema Bank, as well as members of the National Assembly, to deliver digital and financial literacy training to thousands of small business owners.

These trainings are designed to prepare entrepreneurs for the changing business environment and improve their chances of success.

Formalisation of small businesses

A major highlight of the report is the registration of thousands of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). According to SMEDAN, this move will enable more small businesses to access funding, join formal supply chains, and grow their operations.

Model industrial hub in Abuja

In Abuja, SMEDAN’s Garment and Textile Hub at the Industrial Development Centre in Idu is providing practical support for local fashion businesses. The facility is equipped with solar power, industrial machines, and affordable workspace, through a partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Distribution of work tools

To support business growth, the agency distributed 123,743 work tools during the quarter. Items distributed include industrial sewing machines, laptops, tricycles, power generators, utility vehicles, and mini buses.

SMEDAN’s efforts continue to support job creation and small business development across all 36 states of Nigeria.
