Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria have been encouraged to adopt sustainable waste management practices as the country’s economy continues to recover. This call was made during an industry dialogue held in Lagos.
Mr. Adefemi Afolabi, General Manager of the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office, highlighted the growing concern over industrial waste, particularly sewage. He urged SMEs to follow environmental regulations to safeguard public health.
“We are concerned about waste generated by industries and will continue engaging business associations on proper disposal methods,” Afolabi said.

Manufacturing sector’s role
The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) reaffirmed its support for government efforts to strengthen local production.
“We will ensure the government remains attentive to the manufacturing sector,” a MAN representative stated during the event.

Sustainability as a business strategy
Mr. Robert Ugbaja, Chairman of MAN’s Ikeja Branch, encouraged SMEs to see sustainability as essential to their operations.
“Sustainability is now a call to action for all manufacturers to align with global standards and ensure long-term competitiveness,” he said.
The dialogue called for increased collaboration between SMEs, regulators, and industry leaders to improve waste management and promote sustainable development.
