Learnstar has opened applications for the Learnstar Startup Challenge 2027, a pitch competition that offers a N1.5 million cash prize to one winning founder. Applications close on 15 December 2026. Five selected founders will then pitch live on the Exchange stage at the Learnstar Creative Summit in Lagos on 20 February 2027.

How the challenge works

The competition forms part of the Learnstar Creative Summit 2027, an event that brings together entrepreneurs, creatives, investors and industry professionals to discuss business, innovation and the creative economy. Founders apply through the competitions page of the summit’s website by selecting the Startup Challenge. From the applications received, organisers will choose five founders to present their businesses before the prize is awarded.

What a N1.5 million prize can do

The prize is modest next to some programmes in the market. Access Bank raised the top grant in its Womenpreneur programme to N7 million this year, and the iDICE Growth Lab offers up to $350,000 to selected startups. For a founder at an early stage, however, N1.5 million can cover equipment, stock or a first marketing push. The live pitch also puts the business in front of investors and industry professionals who attend the summit.

Small prize pools are easy to dismiss. For a founder without an investor network, the room often matters more than the cheque, because a live pitch can be the first time a business meets people who are able to fund it.

Preparing a competitive application

Pitch competitions tend to reward founders who can explain their customers, revenue and use of funds in a few minutes. Businesses with clean records, a clear market and a specific plan for the prize money present better than those relying on an idea alone. The deadline gives founders more than six weeks to prepare.

Where it fits for SMEs

Pitch challenges, grants and accelerators have become a regular route to early capital for Nigerian entrepreneurs who cannot justify bank credit at lending rates above 30 per cent. The Learnstar challenge adds another entry point, with a deadline long enough to allow proper preparation.

No single competition closes the SME funding gap. A founder who treats each one as a rehearsal for the next investor meeting gets more from the process than one who applies once and hopes.
